I was in Japan from July 1991 to August 2003. I taught English to every age group. My registered name in Japan is Akira Moritani. In Japanese, the last name comes first and the first name comes last. My Japanese name means forest (mori) valley (tani) brightness (akira). The brightness is in the sense of light.

THE SANDS OF THE GOBI DESERT

Take a look at some of this Japanese man's photos of the cherry blossoms.
(See them at http://kobe-okayama.blogspot.com/). Notice the first comment beside the photo for April 8, 2006. It talks about the sky being yellow from the sands being blown to Japan from the Asian continent. Apparently, these sands come the Gobi Desert in China! The first time that I saw this yellowish gold sheen to the Japanese sky, I was mystified. If a person goes out for a walk during this time, a person gets sand up the nose and in the mouth! Thirst is instantaneous!

Japan has only one true desert and it is in Tottori Prefecture (a prefecture is like a state). This 'desert' is about 2 miles square, but there are real dunes and only sand.
